The 5-oz ATB 2017 Ellis Island Statue of Liberty National Monument commemorates Ellis Island as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and celebrates the state of New Jersey.
The coin was issued on August 28, 2017, as the 4th coin release of the 2017 ATB edition, and the 39th coin in the overall collection. It retains the standard dimensions, purity, and weight as the rest of the collection.
It showcases Ellis Island on one side of the coin with a beautiful portrayal of an immigrant family happily approaching the immigration processing building featured in the background. Their son is seen happily holding a small American flag.
On the other side, the image of the first U.S. President, George Washington, is featured. The word “Liberty” is inscribed next to him as one of the most important ideals the first president fought for, along with the official U.S. motto “In God We Trust.” The design was created in 1932 by John Flanagan with the approval of Congress.
The Statue of Liberty National Monument is one of the United States’ most famous National Monuments comprising Liberty Island and Ellis Island in the state of New Jersey and New York.
Ellis Island is a federally owned island in New York Harbor that used to be one of the busiest immigrant inspection stations in the United States. The island is only accessible to the public by ferry. The north side of the island is where the main building is located, the National Museum of Immigration. The south side of the island is only available to the public through guided tours, it includes the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital.
Ellis Island is located in Upper New York Bay, north of Liberty Island. Although most of the island is in Jersey City, New Jersey, a small part of it is an exclave of New York City. It was the cause of a number of jurisdictional disputes between the two states until the 1998 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in New Jersey v. New York. The island has a land area of 27.5 acres, although just 4.68 acres is the natural island’s area, with the rest being artificial and from land reclamation.
Although the more famous part of the monument is the Statue of Liberty found on Liberty Island, Ellis Island is just as important in American immigration history.
