The prominent image of Frederick Douglass is featured on the Silver 5-oz ATB 2017 Frederick Douglass National Historic Site Coin obverse. He’s pictured writing on his desk in front of his home, Cedar Hill, which is nowadays better known as the main attraction of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site.

The coin retains the standard measurements, composition, purity level, and reverse design. Depicted on the reverse is the left-profile display of President George Washington, designed in 1932 by John Flanagan. The design was approved and introduced in 1932 by Congress, on the 200th anniversary of the first president’s birth. It has remained an integral part of the U.S. quarter since its introduction.

About the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site

The 2nd release in the 2017 America the Beautiful series celebrates the District of Columbia. It’s represented by the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site located at 1411 W Street, SE, Anacostia.

Washington, D.C., or formally called the District of Columbia, is the federal capital city of the United States of America. It was founded after the American Revolution in 1791 to serve as the new national capital, and it was named in honor of the United States’ first president, George Washington. It’s located along the Potomac River between the states of Maryland and Virginia.

The three U.S. government branches are centered in the capital. The White House, the official residence and office of the president of the United States is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW; the U.S. Congress and the Senate are both located at the Capitol Building, Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall. The National Mall itself is home to a number of national monuments and museums.

Frederick Douglass National Historic Site is located at 1411 W Street, in Anacostia. Douglass lived in the house from 1877 to 1888, and he named it Cedar Hill. It’s perched on a hilltop, and it offers a beautiful view of the U.S. Capitol and the capital’s skyline. It was established in 1988, and it’s dedicated to preserving the home and estate of Frederick Douglass, a profound American abolitionist, social reformer, orator, statesman, and writer.

Frederick Douglass is noted by some as the most influential African American of the nineteenth century. He was a firm believer in the equality of all peoples, no matter the race, gender, or nationality. He was also criticized for that view by radical abolitionists for his willingness to dialogue with slave owners to which he famously replied: “I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.”
