About Lowell National Historical Park
Lowell National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park located in Lowell, Massachusetts. It was established in 1978, just 4 years after Lowell Heritage State Park. It comprises a group of different sites in and around the city of Lowell, related to the textile manufacturing era during the Industrial Revolution.
East Chelmsford was first settled by Europeans in the 17th century, and it was later renamed Lowell in honor of the founders’ deceased business partner. It became an important manufacturing center along the Merrimack River in the early 1820s. Also known as the “Lowell Experiment," it was an attempt at creating a manufacturing center with a combination of production efficiency with democratic morals and social structure.
