The Silver 5-oz ATB 2019 San Antonio Missions National Historical Park Coin is the 49th coin in the America is Beautiful silver coin series which has been issued since 2010 by the United States Mint. The coin is dedicated to the historical development of San Antonio and Catholic and Spanish cultural heritage in the big Texan city.

About the San Antonio Missions Park 5 oz silver coin

The obverse is the classic U.S. quarter design featuring the left-profile portrait of the first American President, George Washington. The design comes from John Flanagan with the approval of Congress in 1932, following the 200th birth anniversary of the first president of the United States. It is a redesign of an effigy made by Houdon in 1786. The word “Liberty” as one of George Washington’s ideals is inscribed on the coin, along with the U.S. motto “In God We Trust."

The reverse side of the Silver 5-oz ATB 2019 San Antonio Missions National Historical Park coin bears the image of a cross that divides 4 symbols of: arches and bells, a lion, waves, and wheat. The arches and bells symbolize community, the lion symbolizes Spanish cultural heritage, the waves represent the San Antonio River, and the wheat symbolizes the area's farming heritage. The design is based on Spanish colonial reals, a currency used in Spanish colonies in America.

About the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a National Historical Park and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves four of the five Spanish frontier missions or outposts in San Antonio, Texas, USA. The outposts were established by Catholic religious orders to spread Christianity among the local natives. It was part of a large colonization system that stretched across the Spanish Southwest in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

The fifth, and by far the most famous, mission in San Antonio, the Alamo, is not part of the Park but it is part of the designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
