The Silver 5-oz ATB 2020 Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Preserve coin celebrates the U.S. Virgins’ remarkable historical and natural heritage. It’s the final territory of the United States to be featured in the America the Beautiful silver coin collection. It is honored as the 3rd release of the 2020 ATB series, and the 53rd overall in the collection.

On the obverse of the Silver 5-oz ATB 2020 Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Preserve coin, we find the left-profile bust of President George Washington, the first elected president of the United States. The bust was designed by John Flanagan in 1932, and approved by Congress as the replacement design for the U.S. quarter, honoring the 200th anniversary of the first president’s birth. Along with the image, we see the ideal “Liberty” and official U.S. motto “In God We Trust” inscribed into the coin.

The reverse side of the coin features the image of a young red mangrove tree, a rare species found in the protected mangrove trees in the U.S. Virgins. It is the symbol of one of the most important ecological species protected by the Ecological Preserve. The smooth edge of the coin features the inscriptions of the featured protected area, territory, and the old Latin U.S. motto “E pluribus unum."

About Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Preserve

Officially known as the Virgin Islands of the United States, they are a group of Caribbean islands and an unincorporated and organized territory of the United States. The group consists of the main islands of Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas, and the surrounding minor islands. The territory’s capital is named Charlotte Amalie, located on the island of Saint Thomas. The islands were originally named "Santa Úrsula y las Once Mil Vírgenes" by Christopher Columbus in 1493 after the legend of Saint Ursula and the 11,000 virgins, but the name was later shortened to “the Virgin Islands."

The Salt River Bay National Historic Park and Ecological Preserve is a unit of the National Park Service located on the island of Saint Croix in the United States Virgin Islands. It’s dedicated to preserving mangrove forests, upland watersheds, and estuarine and marine environments that protect and support threatened and endangered species. It has an important historical component to it, and it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places

The park was established on February 24, 1992, by Congress. It was also enlisted on the National Register of Historic Places on the same day. The park includes the Columbus Landing Site, which is an important American National Historic Landmark, and every major period of human habitation on the islands is represented through culture. It’s the only known place where members of a Columbus expedition set foot on modern United States territory. The site is marked by Fort Salé, an old French fortification from 1617.
