To mark the 35th anniversary of the American eagle coins, the U.S. Mint issued a redesign in July 2021. The silver American eagle brings together the best of the original Type 1 design and an exciting, new look for this classic piece of American numismatic history.
The obverse side of this coin shows Adolph Weinman’s familiar Walking Liberty design, her right arm outstretched in a welcoming gesture as she walks across a sunny plateau. She is draped in the American flag with branches of laurel and oak in her left hand.
The Type 2 design now includes Weinman’s signature mark “AW” and is notably clearer and crisper than before. The U.S. Mint set out to produce a coin that reflects Weinman’s initial vision of Walking Liberty more authentically. We think the artist himself would be delighted with the result. As before, the obverse features the date, the word “Liberty,” and the phrase, “In God we trust.”
On the reverse side of the coin, the new dynamic design of an eagle is shown swooping into view, clutching an oak branch in its talons, perhaps to add it to a nest. Traditionally, the oak branch symbolizes strength, morale, and resistance. The words “E Pluribus Unum” are inscribed in raised lettering along with the silver content, the phrase “United States of America,” and the nominal face value of $1.
The redesigned image was designed by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Micheal Gaudioso. Damstra included the oak branch both as a symbol of strength and the national tree of the U.S. The mint also added anti-counterfeiting measures, including a highly detailed reed pattern along the coin’s rim to improve security and frustrate counterfeiters.
Each of these coins is struck in one full troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver, fully backed by the U.S. government. The silver American eagle is one of the most recognizable and sought-after coins ever produced by the U.S. Mint, known and treasured worldwide. The new design has generated considerable interest, and the initial inventory of 300,000 1-oz silver American eagle proof coins sold out in the first 20 minutes of the sale. We expect this high demand to continue, so we strongly advise you to act now if you want to add the first year of the Type 2 silver American eagle to your collection.
