In October 2019, the United States Mint announced plans to refresh the reverse field of its American Silver and American Gold Eagle Coins for the 2021 date mark, coinciding with the 35th-anniversary release. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, plans were disrupted. Unprecedented demands and adjusted work schedules led to delays, and a new design wasn’t chosen until late 2020.

As a result, the US Mint released two versions of the 2021 Proof Eagle, Type 1 and Type 2, initially offering the original design combinations before transitioning to the new reverse.

The obverse visuals on the 2021 1 oz Proof American Silver Eagle Coins feature the timeless Walking Liberty design, created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. The Type 2 release includes Weinman’s original “AW” signature mark.

The reverse imagery showcases the fresh look of the American bald eagle, designed by Emily Damstra. The eagle is depicted in flight, clutching a large oak branch. The coins now feature a reeded edge variation for enhanced anti-counterfeiting defense.

These 2021 1 oz Proof American Silver Eagle Coins have earned a PF69 certification from the NGC, indicating full mint luster with a maximum of two minor flaws. These flaws are limited to tiny contact marks or hairlines outside the primary focal points of the coin. The coins also come with UCAM and Early Release designations. Ultra-cameo coins boast frosted designs with clear, mirrored fields, while Early Release coins were graded within 30 days of release.
