While the Great Eastern did not achieve commercial success in its intended passenger transport role, it left a lasting impact on ship design and engineering. The ship’s legacy is recognized for its innovation and contributions to maritime technology during the 19th century.

On the obverse, discover the national coat of arms of Rwanda. This design features a traditional basket in front of a cogwheel, flanked by branches of coffee and sorghum. Overhead, a stylized sun shines, with traditional warrior’s shields on either side.
The reverse of the coin presents a detailed depiction of The Great Eastern. Designed by Brunel and constructed by John Scott Russell & Company, this historic ship took nearly four years to complete. Construction began in May 1854 and concluded in January 1858.
