Piscivores have diets that are primarily made up of fish, but they also eat other aquatic animals like crustaceans, mollusks, and aquatic insects. Sea otters are one of the few non-primate mammals known to use tools. They often use rocks to crack open hard-shelled prey like clams, mussels, and abalone. They may even have favorite rocks that they keep with them, storing them in a loose pouch of skin under their armpit.

The reverse of the 2024 1 oz Silver Otter Coins shows an otter emerging from the water. It’s depicted in the foreground, catching fish that leap above the stylized waves. While some otters, like sea otters, spend most of their time in the water, others, such as river otters, split their time between land and water.
