The Flowing Hair Dollar was first introduced by the United States Mint in October 1794, featuring a left-profile image created by Robert Scot, the mint’s first Chief Engraver. This coin was America’s first silver dollar and its first Liberty coin design. The mint produced these coins in 1794 and 1795, with only 1,758 coins struck. After this short run, the design was replaced by the Draped Bust Dollar, and today, there are fewer than 150 original Flowing Hair Silver Dollars still known to exist.

This design, also created by Robert Scot in 1794, shows a bald eagle with wings spread, standing proudly on a laurel wreath. Although initially viewed as a symbol of strength, this design was soon replaced by the US Mint in favor of designs that better represented the nation’s ideals.
