The story behind this coin begins with the Philistines capturing the Ark of the Covenant in battle. When they placed it in the temple of their god Dagon, a series of unusual misfortunes followed. Their idol Dagon was repeatedly found toppled, and the people suffered from tumors and a plague of rats. After seven months of hardship as the Ark moved from city to city, each Philistine settlement encountered similar troubles, leading them to believe the Ark was the cause.

Following the advice of their priests, the Philistines loaded the Ark onto a cart drawn by two milk cows and sent it back to Israel. The priests instructed that the cows should go straight to Beth Shemesh in Israel if the Lord had indeed caused the afflictions, and the animals did exactly that.
