Each 2024 2 oz New Zealand Silver $5 Niue Hawksbill Turtle Coin is accompanied by a protective plastic flip. Since its debut in 2010, this coin series has maintained a consistent design on the reverse, with King Charles III making his first appearance on the obverse in 2024.
Throughout its history, the New Hawksbill’s design has evolved, with some changes being minor. The reverse has consistently featured the hawksbill turtle at its center. While the modern Niue Hawksbill showcases the word “TURTLE” on this side, the series was previously known as the Fiji Taku from 2010-2013, displaying the word “TAKU” on the reverse.
Regarding the obverse, three different designs have graced the coin. From 2010-2012, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was featured, followed by the Fijian coat of arms in the 2013 Fiji Taku release. From 2014-2023, Her Majesty’s effigy returned, and in 2024, King Charles III made his debut.
King Charles III is featured on the obverse of the 2024 Silver Niue Hawksbill Turtle Coins, portrayed in a left-profile relief by Jody Clark, without a crown.
On the reverse of the 2024 2 oz Silver $5 Hawksbill Turtle Coin, you’ll find the distinctive hawksbill turtle. Identified by overlapping scutes on its carapace, giving it a serrated or “saw-like” appearance, these turtles have a flattened body, a pointed head, and a beak-like mouth adapted for feeding on sponges.
