The Morgan Silver Dollar, a classic US Mint coin, was first introduced in the 19th and 20th centuries as a circulating silver dollar. Originally minted from 1878 to 1904 and once more in 1921, George T. Morgan’s iconic design made a comeback in 2021. Coin Highlights:
The first Morgan Dollars in 1878 ended a five-year pause in the minting of silver dollars in the United States. This break followed the cessation of the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar in 1873, caused by Congressional legislation that halted free silver coinage.
George T. Morgan, then an assistant engraver at the US Mint, designed the obverse and reverse of the Morgan Dollar. His designs appeared annually from 1878 to 1904 and once more in 1921, after another break in silver dollar production. The Morgan Dollar was minted until December 1921, when a new silver dollar design was sought to replace Morgan’s.
The obverse of the 2024 Morgan Silver Dollars displays Lady Liberty. This left-profile image shows Liberty with a Phrygian cap, a coronet crown, and a laurel wreath.
The reverse of the 2024 Morgan Dollar Coins features an American bald eagle. This heraldic eagle, designed by Morgan, shows the eagle with wings outstretched, holding arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both war and peace.
These 2024 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are graded Mint State 70, indicating they are perfect coins with original mint luster and no flaws. As Advanced Release coins, the NGC confirms these were purchased by designated mint customers before the public release.
