In its second year of production, the Morgan Silver Dollar saw an increase in mintage. While mintage was up overall, the increase was largely due to the reopening of the New Orleans Mint and nearly doubled production at the Philadelphia Mint. The San Francisco Mint, one of only two mints to produce the coin every year of its availability, saw its high volume from 1878 remain on-par in 1879. Now, 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coin offered here is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Coins are individually packaged in plastic flips, with the option of multiples of 20 coins in plastic tubes when available. The 1879 issue was the second in the Morgan Dollar series, marking a pivotal time when production significantly ramped up at the US Mint.
The Morgan Silver Dollar first appeared in 1878, produced at the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Carson City Mints. By 1879, the New Orleans Mint resumed operations after a long pause due to the Civil War. San Francisco’s mintage slightly decreased in 1879, with 9.11 million coins struck compared to 9.77 million the previous year. However, with the New Orleans Mint producing 2.88 million coins, total production saw a notable rise.
The obverse of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar features George T. Morgan’s well-known portrait of Lady Liberty. Shown in left-profile, she wears a Phrygian cap, along with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown, creating one of the most iconic Liberty designs in U.S. coinage.
On the reverse, the 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar showcases a heraldic eagle, also designed by Morgan. The bald eagle is depicted with outstretched wings, holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing the nation’s readiness for war or peace. Morgan’s eagle is unique in that it doesn’t feature the traditional national shield.
