Perth Mint’s 2020 1.5 oz Australian Striped Marlin coin is one of three different marlin-themed coins released that year. A closer look at the 1.5 oz Australian striped marlin coin

The striking Australian striped marlin silver coin’s reverse features a dynamic design of a leaping marlin. It’s the same design as the gold coin, only much larger and easier to appreciate. Here’s what we previously wrote about this design: 

a stunning depiction of a striped marlin leaping from the textured waves beneath it, its sharp bill and dorsal fin both piercing through the circular design enclosing the rest of the image. This is a rather subtle bit of design that results in a strikingly vivid, three-dimensional coin. The marlin seems to be surging right out of the water, off the face of the coin itself. This is, without a doubt, the best depiction we’ve seen of any fish…

No, our opinion hasn’t changed. Perth Mint’s outstanding designer Ing Ing Jong has, once again, truly impressed us with her artwork. 

The reverse is very clean otherwise: the name of the coin along the bottom edge, an unobtrusive “P” mintmark on the left side and, if you look very closely, the initials “IIJ” in the marlin’s tail. 

The obverse features Jody Clark’s famous fifth portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Unlike on British coinage, the portrait is "uncouped" (in other words, it includes the Queen's shoulders – scandalous!) The Queen also wears the Coronation Necklace; originally made for Queen Victoria in 1858, it was also worn at the coronations (as Queen's Consort) of Queen Alexandra in 1902, Queen Mary in 1911 and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen mother) in 1937. Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the face value:ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA / 1 1/2oz 9999 Ag / 2020 / 2 DOLLARS
