Introduced in 1987, one year after the enormously successful introduction of the 1-oz version, the Gold American Eagle Proof 1/2-oz coin was born. This version became an instant success leading to two other weights the next year.
Like its brethren, it is made up of fine 22-karat gold, guaranteed by the United States government for its weight, content, and purity. Its 1/2 troy-ounce weight makes it a perfect collector’s price compared to the full 1-oz version. And its proof minting process marks it as one of the most beautiful official coins of the United States.
It was originally minted at the Philadelphia U.S. Mint location and ran until 1993. Since then, it has been stamped at the West Point Mint location in New York and remains one of the most popular coins from the U.S. Mint.
The 1/2-oz Gold American Eagle Proof carries a face value of $25. It is clearly identified by its mirror-like background and two-struck, raised images. These include Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ famous Lady Liberty on the obverse (front) side and Miley Busiek’s majestic bald eagles on the reverse (back) side.
Along with these classic and collectible images are inscriptions denoting the face value, purity, year of mintage, and mint mark. Add all four of the year’s Gold American Eagle Proof coins with the Gold Eagle 4-piece Proof Set.
