Product Details

The South African Gold Krugerrand was once the only gold bullion coin available to investors. Introduced in the 1960s, it played a big role in shaping the modern gold coin market and remains a respected choice for collectors and buyers today. Now, BullionMax offers the 1/2 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coin, available from random years of issue.

Coin Highlights:

  • World’s longest running gold bullion coin program!
  • Ships in a protective flip or sealed tubes of 15!
  • Contains ½ oz of 22-karat (.9167) gold.
  • Depicts the springbok antelope on the reverse.
  • Paul Kruger, namesake of the coin, featured on the obverse.
  • Official bullion product of South Africa.

The South African Mint launched the Gold Krugerrand in 1967 to promote the country’s gold and encourage private investment. At the time, it was the only coin of its kind and quickly became popular worldwide.

For over a decade, the Krugerrand dominated the gold coin market and held that spot until the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf came out in 1979. Despite new competition, the Krugerrand remained a widely recognized and trusted coin.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, political pressures and the apartheid system in South Africa led to import bans in many Western countries. Still, millions of Krugerrands made their way into the United States during that period, proving the coin’s strong appeal.

Today, the Gold Krugerrand continues to be a well-known symbol of the gold bullion market. It’s a coin with a rich history and strong presence in the global precious metals trade.

On the obverse side, you’ll see a portrait of Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic. This design was created by Otto Schultz and shows Kruger in left-profile.

The reverse shows the springbok antelope, South Africa’s national animal. Both sides of the coin feature inscriptions in English and Afrikaans. The coins available through BullionMax come from random years, depending on inventory at the time your order ships.
