After the enormous initial demand for the entire Gold American Eagle series during its launch in 1986, the proof versions were expanded in 1987 and 1988, eventually giving us the 1/4-oz Proof Gold American Eagle.
This highly popular version makes for the perfect gift or piece for any collection. It bears a face value of $10 and like the rest in the series is completely backed by the United States government for its weight, content, and purity.
Like all others in the Gold American Eagle series, the 1/4-oz is made with 22-karat fine gold. And because of its popularity and availability, it trades at a very low premium over spot prices despite being a proof. As a proof, however, each coin proudly displays a mirror-like finish and clear, raised images and inscriptions.
On the obverse (front) side, it features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 “Lady Liberty.” This side also notes the year of mintage and the inscription “LIBERTY” above the image.
The reverse (back) side shows Miley Busiek’s now-famous eagle family image. This shows a male eagle with an olive branch flying above a female and eaglet in their nest. This side is inscribed with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD ~ 10 DOLLARS.”
From 1988 until 1993, these 1/4-oz Gold American Eagle Proofs were minted in Philadelphia featuring that mint’s “P” mark. Since then, they have all been struck at the West Point Mint in New York.
