The Gold Corona was a common gold coin used throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire between 1892 and 1916. It was produced in several denominations, with the 20 Corona being the most well-known. However, the 10 Corona and the short-lived 100 Corona were also issued. Today, the 1915 100 Corona Austrian Gold Coin is available as a restrike from the Austrian Mint, and you can now purchase it online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
These restrike versions of the 1915 100 Corona Austrian Gold Coin have been produced by the Austrian Mint since 1975. They were released to offer an option comparable to other well-known gold coins like the South African Gold Krugerrand. Each coin comes in protective packaging and is in Almost Uncirculated Plus condition, meaning it has minimal signs of wear, usually only on the highest points of the design.
Originally, the 100 Corona Gold Coin was introduced in 1908 to celebrate the 60th year of Emperor Franz Joseph I’s reign. While the 10 and 20 Corona coins had already been in circulation, the 100 Corona was only minted between 1908 and 1914. When the Austrian Mint began producing restrikes in 1975, it selected the 1915 date as a commemorative issue rather than a reflection of the original production years.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I looking to the left. He became the Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary in December 1848. His nearly 68-year rule saw major changes across Europe and led the empire into World War I. Although Franz Joseph died in 1916, the war ultimately brought about the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
On the reverse of the coin is the crowned double-headed eagle, a traditional emblem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The eagle holds the Hapsburg family’s heraldic shield at its center, symbolizing the dynasty that led the empire during this period.
