The Chinese Silver Panda coin series is a popular collection of silver bullion coins issued by the People’s Republic of China. First introduced in 1983, these coins are highly regarded among collectors and investors worldwide for their beautiful designs and high purity.
The reverse of the coin features the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, while the obverse showcases various images of pandas. The design of the reverse changes annually, making each year’s coin unique. The pandas depicted on the coins vary in pose, scenery, and quantity, contributing to the series’ charm. The Chinese Panda bullion series was the first major coin collection in the world to use new primary design elements each year.
Chinese Silver Panda coins are struck in .999 fine silver, indicating a purity of 99.9%. Initially, the coins were issued in 1 oz weight only, but starting from 2016, the Chinese Mint introduced multiple fractional sizes, including 30 grams, 15 grams, 8 grams, 3 grams, and 1 gram. The 1 oz coin remains the most popular size.
The history of the purity and weight of Silver Pandas is complex. In 1983, the coins were issued through 1985 as proof specimens with .900 pure silver content and weighed in at 27 grams. There were no Silver Pandas struck in 1986. The 1987 release featured a 1 Troy oz weight, but only sterling silver purity, or .925 fineness. After no coins were issued in 1988, the series finally stabilized as a BU collection with 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver. This continued until the aforementioned transition in 2016.
The Chinese Silver Panda coins enjoy a significant following both within China and internationally. Their popularity stems from the high-quality production standards, evolving designs, and the worldwide fascination with pandas as a symbol of China.
The Chinese Silver Panda series is sought after by both collectors and investors due to the combination of its intrinsic silver value and numismatic appeal. As with other bullion coins, their price is influenced by factors such as the spot price of silver, collector demand, and the rarity of certain years or versions.
