Silver Tudor Beasts Coins at BullionMax

Following the massive success of the Queen’s Beasts Series, the Royal Mint continues its focus on the history of the monarchy and the heraldry of the nation with the Tudor Beasts Series. The House of Tudor played a significant role in English history, ruling the Kingdom of England from 1485 to 1603. The Tudor dynasty emerged after the Wars of the Roses, a series of civil wars between the Houses of York and Lancaster. The House of Tudor left a lasting impact on England. Their reign witnessed religious upheaval, exploration, political changes, and cultural advancements, shaping the nation’s history and setting the stage for the future.

Designs in the Tudor Beasts Series

On the obverse of the coins in the Tudor Beasts Series, the collection launched with an effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. With her passing in September 2022, the release of the 4th coin, the Bull of Clarence, brought with it the debut of King Charles III’s effigy on the obverse.

For the reverse of the coins in this series, you’ll find the following designs:

  • In the initial release of the series, the Royal Mint introduces the Seymour Panther, a distinctive creature with a fascinating history. This unique heraldic beast was bestowed upon Jane Seymour, King Henry VIII’s third wife, as a gift upon their marriage. It is noteworthy that this gift was presented in the context of Henry VIII’s efforts to erase the emblems and symbols associated with his previous wife, Anne Boleyn, whom he had recently executed. Jane Seymour received an altered rendition of Anne’s leopard, resulting in the Seymour Panther. Displaying its striking appearance, the panther features spots and emits flames from its mouth and ears. Supporting a shield adorned with the Seymour Wings, the panther showcases joined wings pointing downward.
  • Moving on to the second installment of the Tudor Beasts Series, the Royal Mint showcases the esteemed Lion of England, a heraldic creature of immense significance in English history. Here, the lion is depicted wearing the traditional Imperial Crown while seated behind a shield. This shield proudly displays the combined coats of arms of King Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, as a symbol of their union. The design portrays the royal arms emblematic of Henry VIII’s reign, combined with Jane Seymour’s personal emblem.
  • In the third release of the overall series and second in the BU Series, the Tudor Beasts Series coins feature the majestic Yale of Beaufort. The Yale, deriving its name from the influential Beaufort family, became part of the crown’s heraldry during the reign of King Henry VII. However, it was King Henry VIII who prominently employed the Yale in his heraldic displays. By utilizing the Yale, Henry VIII aimed to affirm the authority of his new wife, Jane Seymour. The design showcases the Yale supporting a shield adorned with Jane Seymour’s arms, solidifying her position as Henry’s queen consort.
  • For the fourth issue of the collection, the Bull of Clarence is depicted on the reverse of the coins. The design focuses on the mighty Bull of Clarence as it supports a shield with the Tudor Rose, an emblem that symbolizes the union of the House of York and the House of Lancaster with its combined red-and-white rose.

Variation of the Issues in the Tudor Beasts Series

The Royal Mint has not issued the coin designs in the same order to date between the Proof and BU versions of the coin. The proof series started with the Seymour Panther, while the BU series started with the Lion of England. The designs to be featured in this series include:

  • Seymour Panther
  • Lion of England
  • Greyhound of Richmond
  • Yale of Beaufort
  • Tudor Dragon
  • Seymour Unicorn
  • Royal Dragon
  • Queen’s Lion
  • Black Bull of Clarence
  • Queen’s Panther
